Karien Norval is the Operations Director of the firm. She specialises in media, constitutional and administrative law with a focus on public sector law. She has litigated extensively in media, constitutional and administrative law in the High Court, the Supreme Court of Appeal and the Constitutional Court.

Karien has advised a wide range of public and private sector clients, statutory bodies, state-owned enterprises, non-governmental organisations, and individuals in all of the above practice areas.

She has co-managed the Land Rights Management Facility for the Department of Rural Development and Land Reform that promoted access to justice for vulnerable land occupiers in all nine provinces.

Karien is ranked by Chambers and Partners and by Best Lawyers, independent international ranking agencies for the legal industry, for her expertise in media law in South Africa.

She received a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in 1982 and a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) in 1986, both from the University of Stellenbosch. She completed a certificate in Commercial Mediation at the University of Cape Town in 2018.
